IRVINE – A band of brothers will fight for each other.

That is the perfect way to describe Laguna Beach’s boys water polo, which battled past third-seeded Montebello for a 12-8 victory in the CIF-SS Division 3 final at Woollett Aquatics Center on Saturday night.

The Breakers (25-6) had not faced Montebello since the 2010 season, but the championship game took on the atmosphere of one of the fiercest rivalries in the sport.

“My brother played, and when he was playing, Montebello took him out of CIF two years in a row,” Breakers senior Jack Dodson said. “It was actually a really interesting feeling because we hadn’t played them in such a long time.”

The clash between the two teams extended from the pool to the crowd, and the high level of contestation on both sides led to the cancellation of the awards ceremony at the end of the game.

Dodson had four goals to lead Laguna Beach. Aki Andersen had three goals, and Cade Baldridge scored twice as the Breakers led from start to finish in the physical matchup.

Jakob Colladay and Trent Sadler were aggressive on defense, which helped Laguna Beach disrupt the passing rhythm of the Oilers (24-4). It led to several scoring chances for the Breakers in transition.

“We were definitely trying to push the pace and try to use our defense to get out on the counterattack,” Breakers coach Ethan Damato said. “I thought that gave us some easy opportunities offensively.”

Garret Hartley made 10 saves to preserve the Breakers’ early momentum. Laguna Beach led, 3-2, after the first quarter, and 7-4 at the half.

Hartley will not be playing in college, and he got emotional after the game.

“These are my boys since I was 9 years old, the past nine years the same team,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for a better team, and they just make me so happy.”
