BREA – The Orange Lutheran softball team, ranked No. 3 in the county the Register, defeated No. 10 La Habra, 8-0, Saturday to win the championship of the Brea Olinda-Yorba Linda Tournament.

Lancers pitcher Maddy Dwyer was dominant, throwing six shutout innings and allowing just four hits.

“Everyone felt really good warming up. We knew it was going to be a team effort with the bats and the defense and we did a really good job executing what we needed to do,” Dwyer said.

SATURDAY’S SCOREBOARD

Dwyer was named tournament MVP, allowing just one run in 19 innings.

The potent offense for La Habra (3-1), which scored 31 runs in its first three games, was subdued by Dwyer from the first pitch. She retired the side in the first inning on 10 pitches and didn’t allow a hit until the third.

Orange Lutheran (4-0) had its bats working early. Ciara Briggs led the game off with a double and was driven in by returning first-team All-County shortstop Mackenzie Boesel. Amelia Van Orman drove in two runs later in the inning and the Lancers had a 4-0 lead.

Highlanders pitcher Janelle Rodriguez settled down after a rough first inning. She retired five straight hitters, but then Noelle Hee hit a solo home run to make it 5-0.

La Habra hitters were making good contact late in the game, but could not get any breaks from the Lancers defense.

“The defense did an incredible job. I’m so happy to have those girls behind me,” Dwyer said.

Briggs drove in two runs in the sixth inning.
