BREA – Billy Hanley will remember his homecoming game at Brea Olinda for quite some time.
The senior running back had 160 yards on just 12 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 34-16 victory over El Modena in a North Hills League opener Friday night at Brea.
Hanley scored on runs of 5, 43 and 54 yards, scoring on Brea’s first drive of each half.
“We played a complete game tonight and our offense is becoming more balanced,” Hanley said. “We knew we had to shut down their offense and did a pretty good job of that.”
Michael Martinson had 96 yards rushing in the first quarter and finished with 128 on 14 carries for Brea (4-4 overall, 1-0 in league), which next plays at Canyon on Thursday night with first place at stake.
Brea’s Nick Drury had two TD passes – a 10-yarder to Zach Arnold and an 85-yarder to Noah Rivera.
El Modena (2-6, 0-1) dropped its fifth game in a row, but saw sophomore quarterback Garrett Gramm connect with Jacob Gonzalez on a 62-yard touchdown pass in the first half and a 12-yard scoring pass to Patrick Marzolino on the game’s final play.
Gramm finished 9 of 20 for 106 yards and the two scores, but was intercepted by Brea’s Nick McCann.
Kenneth Lamb led the Vanguards with 73 yards on 21 carries.
Patrick Marzolino had an interception for El Modena.
