Brea Olinda’s Austin Tamagno prepared for next week’s Orange County Championships by finishing second in the sweepstakes race at the Clovis Invitational Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

After a first mile that saw Tamagno and Dana Hills’ Jake Ogden among the lead pack at the mile marker, Tamagno and Stockdale standout Blake Haney put some distance between themselves and the lead pack at the two mile mark and were nearly stride for stride.

Haney managed to move out in the final mile and won in a time of 15:02. Tamagno was second in a time of 15:07, with Arcadia’s Phillip Rocha coming third in a time of 15:13.

Tamagno’s time of 15:07 was the fastest of the day among all county runners and the third fastest ever by a sophomore on the Woodward Park course.
