Valencia freshman Ricky Castillo survived a three-hole, sudden-death playoff to win the Heather Farr Golf Classic on Sunday at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

Castillo started the final round in second place, and finished the 54-hole tournament with a 1-over-par 72 to move into a three-way tie for first at 5-under-par 208.

It was his first AJGA tournament triumph since the BBCN Bank Junior All-Star last August.

Castillo was tied for eighth after the first round, opening with a 2-under-par 69, and moved to within two strokes of the lead when he carded a 4-under-par 67 in the second round.

Corona del Mar freshman Clay Seeber finished the tournament with a 2-under-par 211 to tie for seventh.

SWIMMING

Los Alamitos swimmer Sydney Rouse was surrounded by tech suits.

As the sophomore stood above Lane 4 for the girls 100-yard backstroke final at the Klaus Barth Wilson Invite, the swimmers to her left and right were clad in jammer-style suits known to trim precious time in races.

Rouse wore a traditional-style suit, sometimes called a training suit.

“It was kind of intimidating, but I just try to swim my best,” she said.

Rouse finished a close third and executed precisely what Los Alamitos expected in its strategy.

The Griffins’ boys and girls are not wearing any technical apparel now, and training on the days of meets, in hopes of peaking in May for the Sunset League Finals and CIF.

The Los Alamitos boys are wearing traditional trunks and no caps.

“The league meet in May is so much more important,” Coach Brent Danna said. “These kids are going to drop time. … They’re following the game plan.”

Los Alamitos is still racing fast. The boys upset Edison last week in league and the girls defended their title at the Klaus Barth meet Friday in Long Beach.

“We have confidence in ourselves that we can do well even with just our practice suits on,” junior Kara Gilbert said. “We know that when we put (the tech suits) on at the end of the season, it will make us just that much faster.”

Top meets this week: Tesoro’s No. 9 boys play host to formerly county-ranked and defending South Coast League champion Dana Hills on Tuesday.

The Catholic State Swim Challenge at Santa Margarita and the Kennedy Invitational are Saturday.
