Matt Bowman was named head coach of the Crean Lutheran football team on Thursday.

Bowman has been an assistant coach in the program since 2009, and he served as the school’s defensive coordinator since 2012. He replaces Bruce Mertens, who resigned in February.

In a statement released by the school, Bowman said: “Helping grow this program over the last seven years has been one of my life’s greatest joys and I’m thankful for the opportunity to lead this excellent group of young men. They’re family to me, and I’m blessed to be given the opportunity to take Crean Lutheran Football to the next level.”

Crean Lutheran went 9-4 overall and reached the semifinals of the CIF-SS East Valley Division playoffs last season.

Prior to joining the Crean Lutheran football staff, Bowman served as a lower level football coach at Orange Lutheran.
