GARDEN GROVE – Winless coming into the game and trailing by 13 points early in the second quarter, Bolsa Grande rebounded to open Garden Grove League play with a 28-13 victory over La Quinta on Friday night at Bolsa Grande.

The Matadors (1-5, 1-0) gained 328 yards and took advantage of five La Quinta fumbles. Anthony Porras passed for 185 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair in the final eight minutes of the second quarter that put Bolsa Grande ahead to stay, 14-13.

The Aztecs (1-5, 0-1) were in control at the outset, recovering a fumble deep in Bolsa Grande territory and converting the turnover into a 10-yard touchdown run by Vinny Tran less than four minutes into the game. La Quinta extended its lead to 13-0 with just over two minutes gone in the second quarter when Tam Le’s 13-yard touchdown run capped a drive that included a pair of 15-yard penalties on Bolsa Grande.

Porras, who had thrown just two passes to that point, led the Matadors downfield quickly, completing a 38-yard toss to Andres Arreola to move into Aztecs territory.

Two plays later, Porras connected with James Asiata for a 32-yard TD pass that cut La Quinta’s lead to 13-7.
