Outlook: Bishop Montgomery defeated Mater Dei, 70-55, on March 4 in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division championship game. In the regionals, top-seeded Bishop Montgomery defeated Torrey Pines, 67-49, in the first round and Chino Hills, 87-80, in the semifinals. Bishop Montgomery advanced to the regional championship game last season. Bishop Montgomery lost there to Chino Hills. Bishop Montgomery is 4-4 in regional championship games. Bishop Montgomery senior guard Ethan Thompson, who signed with Oregon State, is in most discussions regarding Southern California’s best player. The 6-foot-5 Thompson scored 23 points in the Knights’ win over Mater Dei in the CIF-SS Open Division game. Also in that game, Bishop Montgomery’s David Singleton scored 21 points, and the Knights’ Jordan Schakel added 16. Mater Dei has won 16 regional championships, by far the most in state basketball history. They won four regional Open Division titles in a row from 2013 to ’15. Mater Dei junior center Bol Bol is averaging 17 points and 9 rebounds a game. He has been the Monarchs’ most effective player in the regionals in which Mater Dei defeated Westchester of Los Angeles, 74-60, in the first round and St. Augustine of San Diego, 63-57, in the semifinals. The winner of this game plays the winner of Saturday’s CIF Northern California Regionals Open Division championship game between Woodcreek of Roseville (31-2) and Sheldon of Sacramento (30-3).
