The Edison boys volleyball team had set point three times in the opener of Tuesday’s Sunset League match against Newport Harbor.

Each time, the Sailors found a way to stay alive, eventually stealing the victory.

The eighth-ranked Chargers returned to the court in the second set and found a way to regroup, leading the Chargers to a 27-29, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 victory at Newport Harbor.

Edison led, 24-21, in the first set.

“I’m just glad that we came back out and kept playing volleyball,” Edison coach Trent Jackson said. “We didn’t let that (loss) take over our thoughts. We moved on and were able to win games two, three and four.”

The Chargers (6-11, 2-0) trailed throughout the second set, but finally caught the Sailors at 22-22 on a kill from Garrett White. Newport Harbor (4-12, 1-2) committed three consecutive errors, helping the Chargers even the match at 1-1.

Edison also overcame an 18-15 deficit in the third set.

“I thought we served and passed a lot better than we have,” Jackson said. “We did a pretty good job in game one of attacking in the middle and scoring points. We played decent defense at times. I just think we can play better than that.

“We have to continue to get better and then limi the unforced errors and really reduce those because they’re killing us.”

White and Nick Bauer led the Chargers with 13 kills. Clay Carr had 20 for the Sailors.

“I feel like we’re right there,” Newport Harbor coach Bryan Cottriel said. “The young guys (freshman setter) Landon (Monroe) is doing a good job, the middles are starting to get better, Clay (Carr) is obviously Clay and the outsides are starting to get better too.

“We just can’t sustain a high level of play. I don’t know what it is. Hopefully, this is something we can get going.”

The Chargers continue league play Friday against Los Alamitos. The Sailors host Fountain Valley.
