BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Beckman boys volleyball team turned in another impressive tournament performance this past weekend.

Beckman, which has already won the Tesoro Tournament and Las Vegas Invitational, finished second Saturday in the La Jolla Varsity Classic.

Jared Bague and Spencer Olivier earned Most Valuable Libero and Outside hitter honors, respectively. Karl Stenlund also received all-tournament honors.

Beckman opens Pacific Coast League play Wednesday against Woodbridge.

SWIMMING

One of the top meets of the swimming and diving season will have a spacious new location this week.

The Mission Viejo Invitational will be held Friday and Saturday at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The complex next to Irvine High features two 50-meter pools.

The meet moves north because of the renovation to the Marguerite Recreation Center, the meet’s longtime home.

The boys and girls diving competition will be held Friday at 10 a.m. Fairmont Prep junior Michelle Lee, the CIF-SS Division 4 champion last May, is among the county’s top entries. She finished second at the Esther Suen Memorial meet earlier this month.

The swim meet will hold prelims and finals on Saturday, starting with the prelims at 9 a.m. …
One advantage of the Savanna Invitational, which La Habra’s girls swimming team won Saturday, is there no limit on the numbers of swimmers teams can enter.

Savanna coach Dennis Nelson has run the meet for the past 21 seasons. …

University’s boys, who this week took over the top spot in the Orange County dual meet rankings, play host to No. 4 Northwood at 3:15 p.m. on April 12. The Pacific Coast League meet should be a fast.

TRACK AND FIELD

Two Trinity League schools were the big winners at the Trophy Invitational on Saturday at Laguna Beach High.

Mater Dei took five wins on the girls side, and Servite took three wins on the boys track.

The Monarchs were strong in the short sprints as Haley Hopkins took the 100 (12.43 seconds), and Mater Dei grabbed the relay win in the 400 at 49.01 seconds.

Mater Dei also had wins in the long jump, triple jump and pole vault.

Sophia Chiaramonte posted a 18-0.5 in the long jump, Bianca James pushed to a 36-5.25 in the triple jump and McKenna Caskey went up for a 12-9 in the pole vault.

Servite continued its hurdle dominance and added a win in the 200.

Kyle Sandoval won the 110-meter hurdles (15.09) and came in second behind teammate Ian Ward in the 300-meter hurdles. Ward won at 39.17 seconds. Julian Irvin took the 200 at 22.73 seconds.

LACROSSE

The Foothill girls lacrosse team had five players – Lauren Kilger, Ava BrandRebecca NailonAshley Stokes and Vanessa Topete – selected to the upcoming Orange County National Team that will compete at the Women’s National Tournament in May at Yale University.

St. Margaret’s had four players selected – Campbell Case, Cailin Young, Megan Vandeburg and Niki Miles.

Mater Dei had three (Sydney Payne, Gianna Danes and Tess Keiser) and there were two apiece for Santa Margarita (Aidan Pike, Natalie Matteson) and Corona del Mar (Joslyn Simaan, Ashley Olson).

Nina Sandler (Los Alamitos), Hennessey Evans (Trabuco Hills), Quinnlyn Mason (Aliso Niguel), Carly Tobias (Beckman) and Ashley Rende (Mission Viejo) are also on the team.

Shay Heft (San Clemente) and Jamie Ko (Mater Dei) were selected as alternates.

BOYS GOLF

Ricky Castillo, a four-time medalist for Valencia this season, is the highest ranked golfer from California in the AJGA, earning the sixth spot in the national rankings.

The Valencia sophomore, who qualified for the U.S. Amatuer Tournament as an eighth grader, has finished in the top 10 in four of his last eight AJGA starts, including a victory in the prestigious Heather Farr Classic.

Through his first four matches this season, he has an average of 35.25, helped by the 3-under-par 33 he posted at Alta Vista Country Club in a three-stroke victory over Sonora.
