After 11 years of trying, Beckman won its first boys golf match at Newport Beach Country Club. It happened on a day when the county’s fourth-ranked team posted one of its highest scores of the season.

Only two of Beckman’s five scoring players broke 40 as the Patriots finished roughly 14 strokes above their average, but they still edged Corona del Mar, 198-205, on Tuesday.

“I guess we broke that curse today,” Beckman senior Brett Robinson said.

His even-par 35 led the Patriots, the seventh time this season he has had Beckman’s low score.

Robinson had to scramble a bit at the end. His approach on the par-4 ninth landed to the left of the green in the rough behind a palm tree. He had just enough of an opening to get a good look at the pin, and he dropped his pitch 5 feet below the hole.

He rolled in his putt to save par and share medalist honors with Tyler See, who posted a 35 for the No. 10 Sea Kings (5-7, 4-6).

Connor O’Hern added a 36 for the Patriots (8-5, 7-3).

“But everyone on the team has dropped some strokes from last year,” Robinson said. “I think this is our best team ever.”

The Patriots are in second place in league with one match remaining.

Corona del Mar is likely to place fourth in league, which would force the Sea Kings to enter the CIF-SS Team Regionals as an at-large team.

“Yeah, it’s disappointing,” Corona del Mar coach Mike Starkweather said. “But it’s a very tough league.”

Also in the Pacific Coast League:

Northwood 174, University 175: Samuel Kim had an eagle and four birdies on the front nine at Oak Creek Golf Club to shoot a school record 6-under-par 29 in leading the Timberwolves (9-6, 3-6).

William Tse posted a 30 for the Trojans (10-5, 6-4) who fell to third place.
