At the beginning of the season, Beckman coach Kevin Lavalle said it would take some time for his young team to reach its potential.
If the past two games are any indication, that time has come.
The Patriots defeated visiting Corona del Mar, 11-5, in a Pacific Coast League matchup Tuesday afternoon. It was Beckman’s second consecutive game with 11 runs.
“We are finally settling into our roles and guys are over the nerves,” said Lavalle. “They stopped thinking too much and it just happened. One of the truest clichés in baseball is hitting is contagious, and there are just games like that.
Beckman (7-4, 3-1) put together a five-run second inning to build a 7-2 lead.
Beckman led, 4-2, after an error and Tyler Geurts’ RBI single, and Corona del Mar (6-5, 2-2) opted to intentionally walk Isaiah Bull to load the bases. The next hitter, Austin Schell, drove the first pitch down the left-field line for a bases-clearing double.
Schell finished 3 for 4 with two singles, a double and four RBI.
The Sea Kings trailed 8-2 in the fourth inning when JT Schwartz hit an RBI single to center, scoring Kevin McCarthy. Later in the inning, a fielder’s choice and RBI single by Teddy Stuka brought the score to 8-5.
The Patriots responded by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Carpenter connected on a line drive to center for a two-run triple, making it 10-5.
Beckman’s Adam Sikes, Will Cohen and Tyler Evert allowed two hits and no runs over the final four innings.
