Conditions were less than ideal for scoring on Monday at Tustin Ranch Golf Course with wind gusting for much of the Pacific Coast League match between No. 5 Woodbridge and No. 9 Beckman.

That seems to be exactly the kind of weather that brings out the best in Beckman junior Jonny Hyun. He posted his lowest round of the season, shooting a 4-under-par 32 to lead the Patriots to a 188-199 victory. It was the first loss for the Woodbridge in six league matches this year.

One week ago, on another particulary windy day at Tustin Ranch, his 1-under 35 heldped Beckman (10-2, 5-2) beat Corona del Mar.

“This was a good win, especially since they were undefeated,’ Hyun said. “It would be huge for us to win the Pacific Coast League championship. We have won it once in the past six year. It would be be big for us.

Playing into the wind on the 413-yard, par 4 No. 8, Hyun hit a pitching wedge 103 yards, leaving him with a 10-foot putt, which he drained for his fourth biride of the day. Hyun hit eight of nine greens and all seven fairways.

He did find the water on his finishing hole, however, when he tried to hit his second shot on the par-5 ninth 204-yards. Most players choose to layup. Hyun blocked his approach and ended up in the hazard, but he got up and down from the drop zone to save par.

“That was a good feeling because Ryan O’Connor was right there,” Hyun said. O’Connor lead Woodbridge with a 2-under 34. “I knew I needed to get up and down to medal. I wanted to continue grinding all of the way through, and I made that putt for par.”

Brett Robinson and Jin Jen also finished in the 30s for Beckman, carding a 1-over 37 and a 3-over 39.

“We are a great team. We have a lot of depth,” Hyun said. “Before we had one or two players that could go low, but now we have them one through five that can go low.”
