HUNTINGTON BEACH – Jose Rubio of Los Alamitos and Woodbridge’s Emily Garner each led the way for their teams to have strong performances in the Beach Cities Invitational on Saturday at Huntington Beach High.

Three of the four wins for Los Alamitos’ boys came from Rubio, and Garner provided two of the four first-place finishes for the Warriors’ girls.

Rubio, a senior, started out by winning the 110-meter hurdles with one of the six meet records broken on the day. Despite a slow start, Rubio posted a winning time of 14.35 seconds.

“My reaction time from the blocks was a little slow and over the first three hurdles, a little slow,” Rubio said. “Towards the end, I started getting the rhythm, getting quick over the hurdles and getting quick in between the hurdles. Felt pretty good at the end.”

Rubio then went over to the jumping pit for a winning long jump mark of 22 feet, 5 inches.
He then came back to the track and broke a meet record in the 300 hurdles.

Both Rubio and second-place finisher Quinn Williams beat the record, but Rubio edged Williams by one-tenth of a second at 37.80 seconds. Williams set a PR with the run.

Brandon Bandley won the boys 800 for Los Alamitos, and the Griffins also picked up a girls win in the 400 relay.

Garner competed in both hurdle races for Woodbridge, and finished first in the 300 hurdles (46.67 seconds). In between hurdles races, Garner cleared 5-2 in the high jump and edged Los Alamitos’ Kallie Given for first place by clearing on the first attempt.

Megan Oefelein took the 800 for Woodbridge’s girls, and the Warriors set a meet record in the 1,600 relay (3:57.27).

Servite was the only other school with multiple wins – in the boys 400 and 1,600 relays.

Another meet record fell in the girls 400, as El Toro’s Maliyah Medley posted a time of 55.67 seconds.

“I was just trying to run my race and get out as fast as I could,” Medley said. “My 200 was a little faster than I expected. I was expecting a 55, that’s pretty great. I’m kind of excited. Really tired.”

It was just the second race of the season for Medley, last season’s CIF Masters 400 champion and it gave her great confidence for the season ahead.

“I was quite proud that I ran that fast,” Medley said. “To improve by four seconds is pretty great.”

Rachel Baxter of Canyon set a meet record as she matched her nation-leading pole vault mark from last weekend with a 14-foot clearance.

Sage Hill’s Alex Escalera set a meet record in the boys pole vault with a clearance at 15-10.

Jacob Smith of Pacifica continued a strong start to the season by winning an entertaining boys 1,600.

Smith got out in front early, but fell behind halfway though. Smith drafted and used a big kick down the stretch to take the race at 4:23.94.

“I didn’t want to go out and take the lead early, but I felt like I had to at some point because the race was going a little slow,” Smith said. “About 800, a guy came up and took the lead from me, so I said, ‘OK, that’s perfect.’”

In the throws, Marina’s Kyle Tsu continued on his roll with a win in the shotput with a 59-4 mark.

Felicia Crenshaw of Costa Mesa reaffirmed her status as one of the top throwers in the CIF-SS with a school record in the discus at 144-5.
