LAGUNA BEACH – Godinez extended its win streak to seven by defeating Laguna Beach, 45-35, in an Orange Coast League boys basketball game Friday night at Laguna Beach High.

Bryan Rivera scored 20 points, and Ramon Lopez-Felix added 17 points with 3 assists and 3 steals for Godinez.

“He (Lopez-Felix) does a lot more than just shoot the ball,” Godinez coach Greg Coombs said. “That’s what has made us successful so far this year.”

The Grizzlies (17-3, 2-0) trailed by three points heading into the fourth quarter. They outscored Laguna Beach, 22-9, in the final quarter.

Lopez-Felix had two steals in the quarter and made all four of his free-throw attempts to finish the game. Rivera had 10 points and a pair of rebounds in the quarter.

“He (Rivera) is good around the basket and he also made a big 3-pointer in the fourth,” Coombs said. “He’s put time in the gym to work on his perimeter game and he’s hit big shots like that for us.”

Laguna Beach (12-7, 1-1) had only seven players in uniform. The school’s all-time scoring leader, Blake Burzell, was inactive for the second straight game.

Grady Morgan led Laguna Beach with 12 points. Charlie Rounaghi had 10 points with 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

“Obviously, Burzell is one of the best players in the county and that hurts,” Coombs said. “Laguna Beach is so well-coached that even without him, they run their stuff well and were able to do what they want to do.”

The 35 points was the fewest scored by Laguna Beach this season.
