Mater Dei’s top-ranked boys water polo team and No. 3 Laguna Beach each won twice Friday to reach the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Invitational, the first major tournament of the season.
The Monarchs (3-0), the defending tournament champion and No. 2 seed, play the third-seeded Breakers (3-0) in the semifinals at Santa Barbara at 10:05 a.m.
Top-seeded Harvard-Westlake (4-0) takes on Loyola of Los Angeles in the first semifinal at 9 a.m. The final is set for 2:25 p.m.
Laguna Beach won two one-goal games to advance. The Breakers edged Acalanes, 13-12, in overtime on a goal by Aki Andersen and then edged Newport Harbor, 8-7, in the quarterfinals. Jack Dodson scored five goals against Acalanes.
Mater Dei beat Righetti, 18-8, behind five goals from Sean Duncan and then beat Miramonte, 12-8, in the quarterfinals.
Loyola beat Huntington Beach, 7-5, in the quarterfinals while Harvard-Westlake handled Los Osos, 24-4.
