Servite announced the hiring of Shawn Gilbert as its baseball coach Thursday night. Gilbert had been the hitting coach at Long Beach State for the past four years.

“Gilbert’s coaching philosophy mirrors what we believe here at Servite; he focuses on the formation of the entire individual, including on-field development,” principal Mike Brennan said in a press release. “Being a man of integrity and character himself, we believe he is a very good fit for the Servite baseball program and a great addition to the Friar family.”

Gilbert spent some time in the major leagues with the New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals and Dodgers. He spent his college days at Fresno State, where he is a member of the school’s Baseball Hall of Fame.

He replaces Jeff Sears, who led the Friars to a 41-40-1 record in his three seasons. Servite was 12-15 record overall and 5-10 in the Trinity League last season.
