FOUNTAIN VALLEY BARONS

Scouting report: The Barons are looking to bounce back in their third season under Coach Ray Fenton, the former successful Cypress coach. Fenton’s touches are visible with the revamped schedule. The Barons scrimmaged against Mater Dei and open against Servite. “That’s the level we want to play,” he said. Fenton made similar moves at Cypress. Like a few of the league contenders, the Barons are experienced on offense with nine returning starters. Quarterback Chad Olberding paces the unit, but fellow senior Kent Swift will also see time at quarterback. The Barons suffered a blow late in the summer with the loss of 2014 leading rusher Dakarai Barnett (torn labrum). But the up-tempo, multi-formation attack will turn to running backs George Sykes and Moe Falealii to pick up the slack. Fenton also believes the offensive line is improved. The Barons return six starters on defense. Tackle Keiti Iakopo appears to be the potential anchor. He has an offer from Southern Utah. Falealii is a potential big hitter at linebacker. Fountain Valley could play several players two ways, including Olberding at defensive back.
Bottom line: The Barons’ offense struggled in three of its four league defeats last season, so if they establish an effective attack with a go-to player, it could do wonders for the team.
