GARDEN GROVE – A burst of 21 points in the second quarter gave La Quinta the push it needed to defeat Santiago, 42-21, in the Garden Grove League opener for both teams Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.

The Aztecs (5-1, 1-0) are off to their best start since 1992.

Aztecs quarterback Michael Nadeau threw for 206 yards, and Dylan Do led the team’s receivers with 89 yards.

Santiago (1-5, 0-1) relied on lightning-fast running back Dylan Ourng who picked up 116 rushing yards.

The Cavaliers trailed, 7-6, at the start of the second quarter, but the game was quickly taken over by La Quinta’s offense. The Aztecs scored on each of their drives in the quarter, and they extended their lead to 28-6 by halftime.

The Aztecs defense also played a role in the triumph, intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble.

“We’re not a one-dimensional team,” Coach Andy Diaz of the Aztecs. “We run and we pass, and we did both tonight.”
