OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
LA QUINTA AZTECS
Coach: Andy Diaz
Last season: 1-9 overall, 0-5 league
Scouting report: The Aztecs will be led by senior quarterback Gilbert Napoles (6-0, 215), who Coach Andy Diaz describes as “very athletic.” Despite the graduation of leading rusher Vinny Tran (1,194 yards in 2014), the Aztecs are expecting big things from their running game. They’ll use Tam Le (428 yards) and Victor Garnica (195) behind a strong offensive line. Defensively, everything starts with middle linebacker Ethan Garcia and outside linebacker Peter Vu. Garcia recorded 76 total tackles and Vu had 68 a year ago. Garnica had four interceptions last season. Those players will have to turn in great seasons to get the Aztecs into contention for a potential playoff spot.
Bottom line: The Aztecs are a work in progress, but if their pieces come together, it will not be easy night for any of their opponents.
Players to watch: Peter Vu, OLB, Jr.; Victor Garnica, RB, Sr.; Tam Le, RB, Sr.; Ethan Garcia, MLB, Sr.
