Loara, pain can't stop Ashmeade, Katella
ANAHEIM – TJ Ashmeade rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Katella to a 42-34 victory over Loara on Friday night at Glover Stadium.
For the third consecutive week, Ashmeade was nearly unstoppable for the Knights (3-0), despite an ankle injury late in the third quarter.
“Honestly, I was feeling pain,” Ashmeade said. “But the adrenaline was going. I didn't want the momentum to go down. I felt the injury, but I just had to get back out there for my team.”
Ashmeade returned to the field two plays later, scoring on a 3-yard run for his second touchdown of the game.
The Saxons (2-2) struck first when Andrew Leopold returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown to give Loara an early 7-0 lead.
That lead didn't last long as Knights running back Nick Castaneda responded with a 60-yard touchdown run on Katella's next drive.
Dereck Groom added to the scoring for Katella as he took a kick-off return 98 yards for a touchdown. Running back Jose Bermejo and quarterback Ricardo Armenta each contributed with rushing touchdowns.
Saxons linebacker Jose Murguia recovered a Katella fumble at midfield to give his team one last shot to tie the game.
With just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Loara quarterback David Gistlinck drove the Saxons down the field.
Gistlinck connected with wide receiver Edson Velasquez and running back Robert Downs on crucial passes only to be stopped at the 5-yard line with just five seconds remaining in the game.
