Santiago smothers Anaheim
GARDEN GROVE- Santiago was without two of its top lineman, John Bui and Alkeem Flowers, but that didn't stop Edward Hornsby and company from taking down Anaheim.
Hornsby rushed for 171 yards on 26 carries, and Santiago's defense limited Anaheim to 109 yards and six first downs as the host Cavaliers shut out the Colonists, 10-0, on Friday.
"Our assistant coaches did a good job of pregame planning, and our defense was outstanding," Santiago coach Aaron Shahrestani said.
Santiago (4-1), No.9 in the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division polls, clamped down on Anaheim (3-2), No. 8 in the Southwest Division, thanks in part to the absence of injured Anaheim running back Mike Reyes and lineman Ramon Mejia.
But Anaheim coach Lanny Booher made no excuses for his squad's defeat.
"When you've got key people out, other people gotta step in," Booher said. "They're a good team, and if you don't bring you're 'A' game thisis what happens."
Paul Escamilla had a three-yard TD run and Robert Fernandez added a 26-yard field goal, both in the second quarter
