ANAHEIM – Gabe Hernandez completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Robert Mounce in the second overtime as Savanna rebounded from a 21-point first-half deficit to defeat crosstown rival Anaheim, 35-28, in an Orange League game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Hernandez threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores to lead Savanna (3-6 overall, 1-3 league), which needs a win over Magnolia next Friday to stay in playoff contention.

Anaheim (4-5, 2-2), which got two touchdown runs and a touchdown pass from Brandon Lopez, is still in the playoff hunt, but faces league co-leader Santa Ana Valley on the road next week.

Anaheim appeared in control throughout the first half, limiting the Rebels to 65 yards of offense and no first downs for the first 22 minutes. When Lopez completed a 30-yard scoring pass to Richard Sanchez with 14 seconds to go in the half Anaheim had a 21-0 lead.

But a pair of penalties against Anaheim gave the Rebels one last play before the break, and Hernandez found Antonio Diaz for a 23-yard touchdown pass.

Hernandez had an 8-yard scoring run and found Diaz for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to tie the score at 21.

Diaz returned a punt 37 yards to the Anaheim 22-yard line early in the fourth quarter, and the Rebels took a 28-21 lead when Hernandez capped the short drive with a 1-yard run.

Anaheim answered by driving 81 yards in seven plays, Lopez capping the drive with a 29-yard touchdown run for a 28-28 tie.
