ALISO VIEJO – Capistrano Valley needed a 2-point conversion in overtime to beat Aliso Niguel and, likely, seal an at-large bid in the playoffs.

The Wolverines’ front seven wasn’t having any of it. The group stuffed Capo Valley at the goal line and teammates swarmed in from the sidelines as Aliso upset the Cougars, 42-41, on senior night.

“We’re playing for pride,” Coach Kurt Westling said before the game.

The Cougars (5-5, 1-3 Sea View League) forced overtime when they tied the score, 35-35, with a 2-point conversion with 1:42 left. They began that drive at their 4 with 3:56 left, but quarterback Kevin Brown and running back Tyler Waggoner combined for the 96 yards with relative ease.

Aliso Niguel (3-6, 1-2) took a 35-27 lead with 8:18 left in the game when quarterback Nick Chapman and running back Andre Cotton connected on a 28-yard catch-and-run — their second touchdown connection of the game.

Chapman finished the game 26 of 50 passing for 395 yards and four touchdowns. He added 92 yards on the ground.

Aliso Niguel had six plays of at least 20 yards, the first one of which was a 70-yard TD pass from Chapman to Cotton to tie the score, 7-7, with 6:14 left in the first.
