LYNWOOD – Century senior Juan Agustin didn’t put up the biggest numbers Saturday night, but his two early touchdowns set the tone in the Centurions’ 35-6 victory over Firebaugh in a nonleague season opener.

Agustin sprinted in from 19 yards out with 5:28 to play in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. His 40-yard TD reception from Adrian Martinez four minutes later gave Century a 14-0 lead, and the Falcons would never challenge.

The win snaps a seven-game losing streak dating to Week 3 of last season.

Century led, 35-0, before putting in its second-string defense and allowed a late score.

“It feels really good tonight, because we’ve been on the other end of these losses,” Century coach Andrew Lapic said. “The day after last season ended, our guys wanted to get back in the weight room and prepare for this night.”

Jimmy Gutierrez led all rushers with 156 yards on eight carries, including a 92-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Agustin was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts and accounted for 17 of the Centurions 35 points.

“As a senior, I know it’s my job to lead by example and that’s what I tried to do tonight,” Agustin said. “After we got up early, we felt confident and were able to put them away.”

Ruben Triscareno had a 5-yard TD run and Joe Flores intercepted Firebaugh and ran it back 42 yards for the score.

Leonard Hemphill’s 12-yard score for Firebaugh with 10:01 to play in the game was all the Falcons could muster on a night they saw seven of its players get taken off the field because of injury.
