Wednesday’s CIF-SS boys water polo semifinals

DIVISION 5

SAN JUAN HILLS (17-11) vs. CORONA (25-7)

Site, time: Santiago/Corona, 5 p.m.

Outlook: The unseeded Stallions, with their senior-heavy starting unit and turnaround story, face top-seeded Corona and center Robert Hamblin. Corona dueled with ML King in the Big VIII League, beating their rival, 7-6, and then falling in the carousel, 7-4. ML King headed to the Division 3 playoffs but fell in the first round against Riverside Poly, 18-11. San Juan Hills surged to a share of the Sea View League title after finishing 0-8 in the league in 2015, the first season for Coach Ivan Buich. The Stallions are now in the semifinals for the first time. Senior Brent McClain leads San Hills in goals with 108. Buich starts four other seniors, including goalie Andrew Mansoor (299 saves), but watch for freshman Max Miller (82 goals, 72 steals). “The No. 1 focus is play like a family,” sad Buich, an ex-Santa Margarita assistant who lived in Croatia during his middle school years. The winner of the semifinal plays the Burroughs-La Canada winner in the finals Saturday.
