MISSION VIEJO DIABLOS
Coach: Bob Johnson (16th year, 163-27-1)
Last season: 11-1 overall, 4-0 league
Scouting report: The Diablos have only six returning starters. That would be a concern at many schools. It’s not a concern at Mission Viejo because annually there are talented players ready to take over. One of those could be junior quarterback Brock Johnson. He has the DNA for the position, being the son of El Toro all-time great quarterback Bret Johnson, who is the team’s offensive coordinator, and being a nephew of another El Toro and USC all-time great quarterback, Rob Johnson, who also is on the Mission Viejo coaching staff. Another Diablo with big-time football genes is sophomore receiver Keyshawn Johnson Jr., whose namesake father starred at USC and in the NFL. Coach Bob Johnson raves about the linemen and figures his running backs, while lacking a singular star, will be productive. Mission Viejo, No. 20 in CalHiSports.com’s state preseason rankings, again looks like the best team in the South Coast League and one of the top teams in Orange County. The Diablos just might be the team to beat in the West Valley Division playoffs, too.
