HUNTINGTON BEACH OILERS
Coach: Eric Lo (eighth year, 47-34 record)
Last season: 9-5 overall, 2-3 league
Scouting report: The Oilers surprised many last season with their run to the CIF Southwest Division title, and they could surprise again. They have to replace Kai Ross, the Register’s offensive player of the year in 2013, but still appear to be a dangerous team, especially on offense. First-year starting quarterback Chad James is surrounded by one of the best backfields in the league, excellent receivers and a huge offensive line. The duo of Travis Heer and Hunter Simmons combined for 1,738 yards rushing last season while Nolan Thompson and Charlie Shuffler are talented receivers. The Oilers also have more size than last season. Huntington Beach features one of the best defensive end tandems in the league in Hojun Lee and Liam Jimmons. The questions on defense are at linebacker and in the secondary. If the Oilers find answers on defense and avoid turnovers on offense, they could contend for the league title.
