SERVITE FRIARS

Coach: AJ Gass (second year, 6-6)

Last season: 6-6 overall, 2-3 league

Scouting report: Servite lost an all-league receiver, Tony Brown, who transferred to La Mirada, but the Friars still are No. 3 in CalHiSports.com’s state preseason rankings. That says plenty about how good this team could be. Servite has 14 returning starters, including 2013 All-County first-team quarterback Travis Waller, who committed to Oregon. Cornerback Maurice Davison was All-County first team last year. Speedy running back Tate Beachley committed to Holy Cross, and offensive lineman Clayton Johnson (6-6, 285) committed to USC. Receiver Equanimeous St. Brown was All-County third team last year. Besides Davison, the defense brings back all-league linebackers Justin Parcells and Jack Savage; Savage might miss some early games because of recent shoulder surgery. Servite has a frightening nonleague schedule, which starts with USA Today national preseason No. 1 Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas and concludes at state No. 2 De La Salle of Concord. Servite could be St. John Bosco’s top challenger in the Trinity League, and looks good enough to make a run at the Pac-5 title, too.
